In 2010 our company has successfully finished development of a range of significant and complex projects for iPhone/Android/iPad (both for ourselves and as outsourcing company for clients in the US and Europe).

We have also rescued our clients four times and helped them to finalize development of relatively complex projects being started by other teams with notably lower qualification, though with lower prices as well =)

In this light we would like, based on our experience, to list a number of signs based on which you can identify the quality level of services on development being offered to you:

1.	Application design and user interface normally take up 15% of the total time (and budget) of the development. Not lower. If it is lower, most probably that you would spend considerably amounts for technical functions but in the end no one would be able to use the product. Don’t save on design – in the world of iPhone/Android/iPad it is the most important element, followed by technical functions.

2.	The share of testing within the total time of development should amount to approximately 30% and more. If it is lower, then most probably that you would need to re-qualify yourself from Client to “tester” and spend huge amount of time for bug-reports sent to developers ;

3.	Drafting of performance specifications cannot be free of charge, especially for complex applications. It is better to pay for its drafting. Even if you would not agree with the final price, you can use a high-quality performance specifications for tenders among other companies. Which would in any event save your money.

4.	The main executives of the project (Project Manager and Senior Developer) should be identified in the contract in advance. If they are not present in the contract, then most probably your subcontractor does not have available personnel and he will hire freelancers, which is an additional risk that the project will fail the deadline and will have low quality.

5. Design and main elements of application should be developed and approved in advance (at initial stage of development). To leave everything at the discretion of subcontractor means that you will get an application which wouldn’t be in demand.

6.	An advance payment in small projects ($5.000+) should not exceed 50%, for medium to large projects (from $20.000) it is normally 30%, while all further payments are tied to results. If you’re asked for more money from the outset, then you deal, most probably, with fraud.

7.	Technical requirements for quality of the source code must be identified in the contract. If the source code is not formatted, badly structured and has weak architecture, it means that your current subcontractor has tied your arms and legs – in case of change of subcontractor you will need to pay much more than you expect to a new subcontractor to support a bad code (if you will be able to find such new subcontractor, after all).

8.	Professional subcontractor will always make Performance specifications and attach it with an estimate for development where rather in details assess the main elements of the project. If such estimate is absent, you lose the most important argument for negotiations with subcontractor in case of any changes in the project.

9.	The contract must contain clearly that subcontractor should develop the application according to requirements and rules of Apple. Don’t restrict yourself for demanding this; requirements of Apple are almost always reasonable and logical. If subcontractor does not agree with such a requirement, most probably he decided to provide you with some dubious solution which couldn’t be published from the very outset.

10.	In large projects subcontractors must allow the Client to track development online (using unfuddle.com, for instance) as well as an access to source codes. For qualified developing teams it is a market standard for a long time already. And for you (Client) this will allow to keep your eyes on the ball and understand that the project is good and systematically under development every day.

I hope that this information will allow you to select only those subcontractors who can provide a high-quality implementation of your ideas within agreed time and budgets.

Sincerely yours,

iPad is a very high quality product and according to expert’s forecast, by the end of the year its sales will reach 9 million (a perspective market for development and sale of software).

Apple once again created out of vague idea of “Tablet” an absolutely new and interesting market.

However, iPad for $499 faces a long queue of competitors with Tablets based on Android – from Samsung to no-names from China.

And all of them have 2-3 times lower price than iPad – just type in amazon, eBay, Google “android tablets” and you will see around 20 offers for price $130-200, with delivery!

Of course, almost all of these devices have problems with stability and quality (with more functions – camera, etc), however, they are cheaper and it is their main advantage!

Obviously, Apple will keep its significant market share of Tablets in the segment of “expensive but stable devices with rather new functions”, however, we expect to see that in a year or two Android Tablets will increase its share and will be larger than that of iPad.

That is why everybody who bets on mass sales of software, should carefully follow Android Tablets – of course, the average user’s bills in this case will be smaller than with iPad, but audience and volumes will be considerably larger.
Moreover, since Android platform is an open, one should expect that industry solutions will be developed exactly based on Android Tablet, and not on iPad.

Therefore, world should expect a larger, second wave of Android Tablet after the first wave of iPad!

Sincerely yours,

The most optimal model competing even with Google and Apple, is the following:

- create a project for publishing books for iPad, Android tablets, iPhone, Android;

- actively invest in marketing and promotion of this project (SEO, SMO etc);

- take unique and long-term niches on this market (e.g. – interactive books etc);

Following our experience in development of mobile platforms for publishers of ebooks, we would like to share with you the major requirements for such solutions:

- single system of administering the books and content;

- support of books in pdf, epub, fb2;

- integration with billing system and payment for books;

- support of feedback from readers;

- support of various multimedia functions both in books and general interaction with the reader (slideshow, display of audio and video content);

- content tied with google maps;

- books integration with social networks;

- other unique functions.

This is how the system of mobile publishing looks like graphically:
